Dr Kersti Seksel – Veterinary Behaviourist
Dogs are social creatures, just like us, which means they like to have company, at least some of the time. So if you work long hours and also have an active social life, then please do not get a dog and think you can leave it alone in an apartment, backyard or courtyard all day and all night. Most pets, however, do not mind spending some time alone as long as it is regular and predictable – they like a chance to recharge their batteries too! There are lots of good options for having a pet and managing their life as well as yours.
If your pet is showing signs of separation anxiety, please seek help from your veterinarian as soon as possible – they do not grow out of this condition and it can get worse with time. There are many ways to help your pet learn to be less stressed and anxious, and cope with being alone.
